1. Increase fruits and veggies. Although April brings a bounty of fresh produce – artichokes, asparagus, limes, mushrooms, oranges, papayas, peas, rhubarb, strawberries and turnips – you can also meet your daily fruit and vegetable goal with canned and frozen varieties. Del Monte® tomatoes come in an assortment of flavors, which can be added to almost any dish or enjoyed alone on pasta. Del Monte® fruit cups are also a great alternative if you’re looking for a sturdy lunch snack to pack for you or your kids.
2. Try low-fat or fat-free dairy. Milk, cheese and yogurt may seem like obvious places to reduce fat, but don’t forget about those hidden sources of high-fat dairy add-ins, such as sour cream and cream cheese. A few spoonfuls of high fat sour cream can leave you devouring more calories and fat than you think. Try using Daisy® Brand light sour cream instead. It has half the fat and one-third fewer calories than original sour cream. With only 40 calories per serving and no preservatives – go ahead; do a dollop of Daisy®.
3. Replace refined grains. Dietary guidelines recommend increasing whole grains in order to help reduce your cholesterol and risk of heart disease. The fiber in whole grains can also help promote digestive health. When you’re clearing your cupboards of outdated goods, swap your white pasta for more nutritious multi-grain pasta. For more protein, fiber and heart healthy omega-3s, try Barilla® PLUS pasta in your preferred pasta shape!
4. Rethink your drink. Over 100 million Americans drink coffee every day to boost energy and mental alertness, and several studies have shown that coffee has outstanding health benefits. Besides containing antioxidants, it can also help lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. But if you are anxious, restless or not sleeping well, you may be suffering from caffeine sensitivity. Although caffeine sensitivity is highly individualized, you may benefit from decreasing your caffeine intake. Folgers® Half Caff offers the same great taste as regular coffee, but with half the caffeine, to help you cut back and still enjoy your daily cup of joe.
5. Move more. Every little bit counts with exercise – you are even burning calories while you spring clean! Light housework can burn over 170 calories per hour, and if you’re really working hard, you can burn over 200 calories per hour! Exercise keeps you looking fit, helps ward off many chronic diseases and unwanted pounds, and it has also been shown to help you sleep better. Aim to be physically active for at least 30 minutes most days of the week, whether it’s cleaning your cupboards, walking your dog or going to the gym.
When spring cleaning your mind, body and home, you want to make sure you have the right tools to help you get the job done. Once your kitchen is stocked with healthful fare, focus on keeping it clean and fresh. After dinner is over and it’s time for some rest and relaxation, don’t stress about the dishes. Cascade® Action Pacs® rinse away reside and leave dishes sparkling clean. No unwrapping, no mess, no worries.
Food spills and kitchen mishaps can leave your clothes stained and haggard if you don’t treat them right away. Instead of endlessly soaking and pre-treating those food-covered clothes, try pre-treating with Tide® To Go® Stain Pen and adding Tide® Stain Release® in the wash. Add the Action Pac, right to your wash along with your regular detergent to remove tough stains the first time.
If fear of food odors has kept you from preparing a beloved dinner, try freshening up your house with a light, clean scent. Febreze® doesn’t just cover up odors, it actually sweeps away odors from the air using patented technology, so you can worry less about lingering odors, and concentrate more on healthful meals for your family.
After the cleaning is finished, enjoy the fruits of your labor. You have healthful kitchen staples to make meal prep a breeze and you have cleaned your way to a healthier, happier you – mind, body and home.
